Gardens and Galleries, born out of the dedication and hard work of local villagers, is held in the pretty little village of Innishannon, Co. Cork each July.
I grew up just a mile or two from the village and have so many fond memories of going down to get the few bits of groceries from the shop. The counter in the shop seemed so tall and me so small! I remember Mum getting things handed over the counter such were the way things were done at that time. If we were good we got a bag of Tayto crisps and they were 5p!!
Gardens and Galleries, the brain child of the author Alice Taylor and her committee, is one of a kind in Ireland to date. It is nothing short of a lot of hard work to be seen in the great efforts to have our village looking as pristine as possible for the event. On a given time you will find the villagers out weeding, pruning, planting, and of course taking care of our insects too with including wild flower beds around the place.
It makes for a very enjoyable weekend held once a year in July. There is a mix of wandering around beautiful gardens and enjoying viewing amazing artistic talent with the galleries spotted around the village. It’s a rich mixture of community and talent for people visiting from far and near. Once you arrive in Innishannon, you are greeted at the village hall where you purchase your day or weekend ticket. Included in this is the little bus that takes you to all the gardens and galleries around the area. I have been on the tour a few times now and just love seeing all the hidden gardens never seen from the road, and getting to see all the wonderful divers artists with their work on show. The atmosphere is really lovely!
My paintings are exhibited in the lovely “Found Out” café in the centre of the village. Mind you if you want to get a coffee you may have to wait it being such a popular little café! I love hearing the news that paintings have headed off to new homes and am always thankful to my customers!
