“Joyful” solo exhibition at the Grey Heron Gallery Bandon

I am sure like me, we are now so long into this strange new world we almost call “Covid”, we are all getting to a point of being fed up, stressed, anxious, even inpatient to get back to normal.  It seems that “normal” may be some time off by the look of things and by all reports.  So, can we look at this time and say we have learned anything? Are there things that we should change, have changed for the better?  Did we enjoy the slower pace of life and having time to be together as family?  I certainly did.  I enjoyed the uninterrupted time together as family and enjoyed conversations together over our meals without having to rush.

Of course, there was another side to all of this too.  For so many, it became a very lonely time, a very isolated time.  Elderly family and friends could not get around as they used to  and had to be even more careful.  It goes without saying, the most incredibly sad time has been for those whose loved ones passed away in these months, and a proper goodbye with the support of family, neighbours and the wider community was not possible.  This will, without a doubt leave a lasting mark on the lives of those who lived out this reality.

Business took the brunt of the lock down in ways we could never have imagined, and some may never recover.  The Arts, Sports, Charities etc, I could go on as to how many were affected in so many ways.

For me, the work that I had produced in the months before, in preparation for the upcoming exhibitions I had this year, all stood silent in my studio.  As an artist, I find to have something to work towards keeps me focused and keeps my mind keen to keep creating and feeding that creativity.  To balance then what was happening in the world around us, and to keep myself disciplined and working was difficult.  I would even go to say a struggle and still is.  It was then, with great relief my postponed exhibition in the lovely Grey Heron Gallery in Bandon was rescheduled and ran from July 20th – August 8th.  The title for this exhibition was “Joyful”.  At the time of planning the exhibition and it’s title, the world was a very different place and with plans in place, things were jolly! Hence “Joyful”.  I still think “Joyful” describes how I am when painting so hey, it still fitted!

I was thrilled with the gallery in the Grey Heron, the backdrop of deep blue was just the perfect background for my moody skies and seascapes.  It made my pieces pop even more.    Philip McLoughlin, the gallery owner was the perfect gentleman to work along side and made the hanging of the exhibition so easy. Thanks Philip!

It was so encouraging to see so many of you pop in and great for me to read all the encouraging remarks left in the visitors’ book.   Thank you to all of you who visited and to those who purchased.  It always puts a smile on my face and gives me a glad heart when someone takes one of my paintings home to hang on their wall.

Looking ahead  none of us know what is next really, we can only hope this pandemic will not last indefinitely so that many great events can be run again.  I am looking forward to getting back to preparing for more exhibitions and really hope it will be much sooner than we think.  Till then, we will all keep doing our part in moving forward together, safely.

God bless

Gill
